Netherlands Fellowships Programme (NFP)

Introduction: overall aim & target group

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within the framework of sustainable capacity building directed towards reducing poverty in developing countries. More specifically, the NFP is focused on meeting the need for further training and capacity building in a wide range of governmental, private and non-governmental organisations (educational institutions, planning agencies, ministries, community-based organisations, private enterprises, etc.). The NFP target group consists of mid-career professionals nominated by their employers.

The NFP consists of two sub-programmes: the Academic Programme (NFP/AP) offering scholarships (fellowships) for master and PhD programmes as well as refresher courses, and the Training Programme (NFP/TP), offering fellowships for short courses, tailor-made training programmes and refresher courses. For the majority of courses/training programmes, applicants should hold a BSc or BA degree in order to meet minimum educational requirements.

As from 1 August 2006, the Netherlands Embassy in Lusaka will only process applications in the framework of the Netherlands Fellowship Programmes for courses that are linked to thematic areas of the bilateral development cooperation programme between Zambia and the Netherlands, as agreed upon in the Joint Assistance Strategy for Zambia (JASZ). The development cooperation programme focuses on the following themes:

  1. Education;
  2. Private Sector Development
  3. Health (including HIV/AIDS); and
  4. Good governance

Criteria & Application Procedures

Before one can apply for sponsorship in the framework of the Netherlands Fellowships Programme, he/she should have received a Letter of Academic Admission from the institution/university in the Netherlands where one wishes to pursue a training programme. To that end, applicants should contact the Dutch institution that offers NFP-sponsored training programmes that are on the eligible course list by sending a letter of motivation, copies of Degree certificates, academic transcripts and a curriculum vitae. Addresses can be found in the annually updated Course List, copies of which are available at the Reception Desk of this Embassy or below. No applications will be processed for courses outside the Course List

Applicants who have met all the admission requirements as set by the Dutch institution will receive a Letter of Academic Admission, after which they can contact the Fellowships Officer at this Embassy (Mrs. Jean Phiri-Mbewe) to start the application for NFP sponsorship. Fellowships include subsistence, accommodation, tuition and book allowances, insurances and, usually, international travel expenses.

Apart from the course-specific requirements as set by the Dutch institution, applicants for a NFP fellowship are expected to meet the following criteria:

  1. they should be nominated by their employer, who pledges to continue payment of the applicant's salary and to hold a job for them while they are in the Netherlands;
  2. they should complete and submit the NFP/AP or NFP/TP application form to the Embassy, and have provided all the required documentation as stipulated by the Fellowships Officer;
  3. they should be available for and take part in the entire period of the training programme;
  4. they should declare that they will return to Zambia immediately after the training programme has come to an end.

The Fellowships Desk at the Embassy is open for visitors & tel. inquiries on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday from 10.00-12.00 hours.
On Thursday from 15.00-16.00 hours for tel. inquiries only.
